Accountant 

DUCA is looking for an Accountant to join our growing team! 

Job Purpose & Summary

Reporting to the Manager, Accounting, the Accountant is responsible for the integrity of accounting information through the recording, verification, and consolidation of transactions, and overseeing assigned accounting and financial activities of the credit union.

In addition to maintaining the general ledger chart of accounts, this role is also responsible for preparing journal entries, account reconciliations, and assisting with  the accounts payable function. 

Key Accountabilities & Duties

  • Prepare and record asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information
  • Assist with month-end closing entries and processes
  • Prepare monthly management reporting and accompanying schedules, worksheets and narratives, including Budget vs. Actual variance reports
  • Assist in providing follow-up and documentation of significant variances
  • Maintain the general ledger charts of accounts
  • Prepare bank and other general ledger reconciliations
  • Determine opportunities to streamline processes, eliminate unnecessary or redundant tasks, and improve governance and oversight
  • Assist with initial internal control evaluations
  • Develop and implement accounting procedures by documenting and analyzing current procedures and recommended changes
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors as required
  • Record and process vendor invoices and payments accurately and in a timely manner
  • Monitor accounts payable aging reports and resolve overdue accounts in accordance with vendor terms and policies
  • Resolve invoice discrepancies by corresponding with internal business owners/vendors and respond to all related inquiries
  • Reconcile processed work by verifying entries and comparing system reports to balances
  • Act as the first point of contact for vendor and internal client queries
  • Support projects related to the accounts payable function ensuring business requirements are fully met and timelines are adhered to
  • Perform other tasks as required in Finance

Occupational Experience & Education Requirements

  • 3+ years of accounting related work experience
  • University degree in Accounting, Commerce, or Business Management/Administration
  • Enrolment in CPA designation program considered an asset

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

  • Strong financial, accounting, and business acumen
  • Strong analytical and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to multi-task with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy in a deadline driven environment
  • Ability to manage an increased workload and demands during peak periods
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers at all levels within the credit union
  • Strong problem-solving and investigative skills, and the ability to make sound recommendations
