Payroll & Benefits Coordinator

Job Purpose & Summary

Reporting to the VP, Total Rewards & HR Operations, the Payroll & Benefits Coordinator is responsible for providing support for accurate and on-time payroll and benefit services to the organization.  This involves assisting with the processing of payroll entries for salaried and hourly paid employees, ensuring compliance with all applicable legislative and organization guidelines, documenting controls-based procedures, and producing regular and ad-hoc reports related to payroll.

This position contributes to a positive employee experience by responding in a timely manner while taking ownership for resolution of any issues.

Key Accountabilities & Duties

  • Prepare and enter all payroll transactions accurately and in accordance with established payroll deadlines; balance payroll entries and prepare the files for audit
  • Maintain and organize payroll records in a secure manner; recommend best practices for payroll related processes; create and maintain controls-based payroll procedure documents
  • Produce regular payroll related reports; submit pension contribution remittances; prepare GL uploads for Finance and assist in resolving discrepancies
  • Respond to employee inquiries about individual pay issues, deductions, taxable benefits etc.
  • Process group benefit plan enrollments, changes, and terminations; reconcile invoices and prepare cost breakdown report for Finance; manage the overage dependent process
  • Supports payroll related year-end activities; reconcile taxable benefit and pension adjustment reports; prepare T2200 and coordinate the process to obtain updated TD1/TD1X forms

Occupational Experience & Education Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • Working towards the Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification an asset
  • 1-2 years’ full cycle Canadian payroll experience

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

  • Comprehensive knowledge of Canadian payroll requirements
  • Experience with Desjardins EmployerD or other payroll systems an asset
  • Advanced computer skills in MS Excel, MS Word
  • High level of integrity with the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information with a high degree of professionalism
  • Ability to work cooperatively within a team and throughout the organization
  • Critical thinking and analytical skills with a focus on problem solving and continuous improvement
  • Meticulous attention to detail and very strong organizational and prioritization skills
