Systems Engineer

Job Purpose & Summary

The Systems Engineer will deploy, maintain, and monitor DUCA’s IT infrastructure comprised of physical and virtualized servers, network switches and firewalls, directory services, storage devices, and public cloud SaaS. This role will contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment.

 

Key Accountabilities & Duties

  • Install, upgrade, and manage computer components and software that form the core technology infrastructure of the organization – servers, virtualization, switches, firewalls, storage, network services, directory services, ant-malware, threat protection, and authentication services
  • Assist with the management of infrastructure solutions considering both on premise and off premise options (GCP, Azure, and AWS)
  • Assist with the management of solutions for integrating computing resources of multiple sites for optimum performance, security, and resilience
  • Manage backup and replication operations and assist in implementing processes for data protection, disaster recovery, failover, and high availability
  • Perform security and performance monitoring of the core technology infrastructure
  • Share knowledge and collaborate with team members including systems engineers, system administrators, and IT support staff
  • Work with 3rd party service providers and vendors to support the core technology infrastructure

Occupational Experience & Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience
  • 3+ years working in an IT related field
  • Experience working as a systems administrator, network administrator, or DevOps engineer an asset
  • Experience with storage solutions like SAN & NAS
  • Experience with replication, and backup and recovery solutions
  • Experience with monitoring software like SolarWinds
  • Experience with Firewall configuration and rules (experience with Palo Alto firewalls an asset)
  • Experience with blade servers an asset 

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

  • Independent contributor with the ability to self organize as well as ability to work with a team for specific projects and initiatives
  • Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Good organization, prioritization, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines
  • Planning, critical thinking, and design skills
  • Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of scripting language (bash, python, or PowerShell)
  • Knowledge of Microsoft technologies/products including Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Office 365 (Azure AD, Exchange Online, Security & Compliance)
  • Knowledge of Virtualization: Managing VMware, Hyper-V servers
  • Understanding of TCP/IP networking (Firewalls, VLANs, Switches, WiFi, LAN, WAN)
  • Knowledge of DevSecOps practices and tools
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information

Working Conditions

This position will require some travel within the GTA. It will also require occasional evening and weekend work, sometimes with little advanced notice.
