Director, Construction Finance

DUCA is looking for a Director, Construction Finance to join our dynamic Commercial Lending team.

Job Purpose & Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, Construction Finance, the Director, Construction Finance will manage a portfolio of construction loans and Member deposits, will independently develop new business, manage relationships, and develop strategies to ensure annual growth, risk, and financial targets are met. Leading a team of Analysts, this position will oversee the annual review program and manage the credit expiries for DUCA’s Construction Finance portfolio. 

Key Accountabilities & Duties

  • Lead a team of Analysts to develop and maintain a profitable commercial portfolio of complex construction loans valued between $3MM-$30MM, including participation in loans led by other credit unions or financial institutions.
  • Source new deposit relationships and loan applications by soliciting existing and potential clients and other financial intermediaries.
  • Review and underwrite commercial credit applications over $10MM, providing products and services which meet the clients’ needs while adhering to DUCA’s lending policies and practices.
  • Support a team of Analysts in underwriting deals typically between $3MM-$10MM.
  • Actively monitor the loan portfolio to ensure accounts are operating as authorized and take measures necessary to remedy non-performing assets.
  • Act as a coach and mentor for their team, develop employee skills and capabilities in the areas of Member relationships, internal practices and approach, and building a personal brand across the organization.
  • Manage and oversee credit expiries for the Construction Finance team to ensure the process is being proactively managed and that DUCA remains within the credit expiry limits established by our credit policies.
  • Lead or represent DUCA in loan syndications related to construction financing.
  • Represent DUCA at community, business networking, and trade association events.
  • Manage performance of direct reports, including training, coaching, feedback, hiring, and performance reviews.
  • Maintain strong understanding of DUCA’s Credit Policy and keep abreast of changes.

Occupational Experience & Education Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in business, finance, or related area, and/or MBA and/or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience in commercial lending, construction financing, relationship management, and/or commercial risk management.
  • 2+ years’ people management experience.
  • Exposure to syndicated and/or shared commercial financing.
  • Sales management experience an asset.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite with strong knowledge of Excel.

  • Proven abilities in coaching, mentoring, and individual employee development towards consistent performance and sales results.
  • Strong interpersonal, partnership, and collaboration skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and meet tight or conflicting priorities.
