Infrastructure Designer (Systems Administrator III)

Job Purpose & Summary

Reporting to the AVP, IT Operations & Infrastructure, the Systems Administrator III is responsible for researching, designing, and managing the corporate IT infrastructure including security, server, and storage administration.  Working with the business, this position will conduct needs analysis to document business requirements, research industry best practices and innovative solutions, prepare the business case and facilitate the decision-making process.

The Systems Administrator III ensures that system hardware, operating systems, software systems, and related procedures align with the organization’s strategies and participates in technical research and troubleshooting to implement systems that support business practices. The Systems Administrator III is responsible for the design, administration, and continual innovation of the following systems:

  • VMWare, EMC and Cisco virtual infrastructure systems
  • Windows and Linux line of business applications
  • Windows Active Directory and related systems
  • Cisco and Palo Alto networking infrastructure
  • DevSecOps methodologies and technologies

Key Accountabilities & Duties

  • Partner with the business to conduct needs analysis and document requirements
  • Conduct research, prepare business cases and proof of concept outlining options for new information systems and technologies
  • Application design using industry best practices
  • Infrastructure design considering on premise and off premise options such as Google Cloud Platform, Azure, and AWS
  • Designing Active Directory systems with multiple sites for optimum performance
  • Designing file storage solutions
  • Network design and routing protocols
  • Provide solutions based on Office 365 and Azure subscriptions
  • Ensure new technologies are implemented with proper planning and documentation; utilize project management methodologies to design effective implementation plans, ensuring projects delivered on time and on budget
  • Research and recommend innovative and, where possible, automated approaches for system administration tasks
  • Work with internal departments to define data and system requirements to ensure compliance with internal, external, and regulatory requirements
  • Work with 3rd party vendors to support existing infrastructure

Occupational Experience & Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline, or the equivalent combination of education, technical certifications or training, or work experience
  • 10+ years experience in system administration
  • Microsoft, VM Ware, Azure, CISCO CCNA, CISSP, and cloud certifications required
  • Project management experience required; PMP certification an asset
  • Experience with storage administration using SAN & NAS technologies
  • Experience managing Cisco UCS blade servers
  • Experience with backup and recovery tools such as Veritas NetBackup and Veeam Backup & Replication.
  • Experience with SolarWinds monitoring software. Linux system administration (Ubuntu/RedHat Enterprise Linux)
  • Experience with Palo Alto Firewalls
  • Experience with Mimecast
  • Experience with DevSecOps methodologies & technologies

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

  • Independent worker with the ability to prioritize projects and activities
  • Good oral and written communication skills with the ability to interact with employees at all levels of the organization
  • Strong organization, prioritization, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks with tight deadlines
  • Highly developed planning, critical thinking, design and project management skills
  • Must be current with all Microsoft related technologies and training including Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Active Directory, Microsoft Office 365 (Azure AD, Exchange Online, Security & Compliance)
  • Must be proficient in VMware, vSphere, vCenter, ESXi and SRM, knowledge of Hyper-V would be an asset
  • Solid understanding of Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking
  • Broad experience in installing and supporting various application servers
  • Building DevOps pipeline and associated technologies will be an asset
  • Experience with financial systems and software an asset
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality when dealing with sensitive information

 Working Conditions

This position will require some travel within the GTA. It will also require occasional evening and weekend work, sometimes with little advanced notice.
