Vice President, Commercial Finance

Job Purpose & Summary

As a member of the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), the Vice President, Commercial Finance is accountable for the implementation of a broadened commercial strategy to develop and enhance DUCA’s existing Member product and service offering.  The Vice President, Commercial Finance is responsible for prudently growing and diversifying the commercial loan portfolio, managing and developing Member relationships, and to grow and lead a commercial finance team with strong business development and underwriting capabilities.   The commercial finance portfolio includes mid-market business and larger real estate related loans with growth opportunity in both areas.

The role will develop a well-respected and identified in-market brand for DUCA aligned with our values and Member ownership.

Key Accountabilities & Duties

  • Lead a commercial finance team to broaden and diversify the commercial loan portfolio, contain risk, and foster a high profile for DUCA among Members and stakeholders
  • Execute DUCA’s commercial finance strategy, including business development, new products and services, and acquisition of new commercial Members
  • Support the development of the strategy and framework for expanding DUCA’s mid-market commercial portfolio
  • Create a robust suite of products and services including the identification and development of new or enhanced financing, business services, and ancillary commercial products
  • Build and retain strong relationships with existing Members, acting as the lead account manager for select clients
  • Identify and develop relationships and new business opportunities with new or prospective Members
  • In close partnership with the Chief Risk Officer and Risk Management teams, manage the asset quality and diversification of the commercial loan portfolio
  • Coach and provide guidance to the Commercial Finance team to minimize credit risks as appropriate
  • Ensure all credit and financing recommendations are in accordance with sound credit-granting principles and compliant with credit policies and procedures including regulatory guidelines
  • Operate in accordance with applicable DUCA policies and procedures and in alignment with DUCA’s values and Member ownership
  • Foster and develop working relationships with other credit unions and financial institutions for shared opportunities including club and syndicated financings
  • Represent DUCA at community, business networking, and trade association events

Occupational Experience & Education Requirements

  • Graduate level degree in business, finance, or related area
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in commercial lending, relationship management, and/or commercial risk management
  • 5 years’ people management experience
  • Exposure to syndicated and/or shared commercial financing
  • Sales management experience an asset
  • Executive level or strategic leadership experience preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Attributes

  • Familiarity with mid-market commercial and real estate related financing
  • Strong business development, leadership, sales, and relationship management skills
  • High level of analytical, credit assessment, and underwriting skills
  • Balanced focus on profitability, portfolio growth, and asset quality
  • Proven abilities in coaching, mentoring, and team development towards consistent performance and sales results
  • Strong interpersonal, partnership, and collaboration skills
  • Highly organized with the ability to multi-task and meet tight or conflicting priorities
  • Ability to manage complexity and the requirement to conform with regulatory, legal, and ethical rules and norms
  • Strong working knowledge of the full suite of MS Office products

Working Conditions

Some travel and after-hours requirements to attend networking and business development events will be required.
